BMTC buses in Bengaluru
Which buses does the bus planner cover?
BMTC buses in Bengaluru: ordinary (non-AC) buses, Vajra (AC) and Vayu Vajra (AC, airport) services. It finds direct buses and trips with one change, and says which bus number to board, where to get off and where to change.
Are the bus times live?
No. Departures are scheduled times from the BMTC app data, so a bus can run late, change route or not run. Many routes list only a few departures in that data, so the next bus shown is the next one on the list, not a promise.
How is the time on the bus worked out?
From the same predicted road traffic the road planner uses: a bus moves with the traffic around it, so its speed is the car speed for this trip at this time. On top of that we add time standing at stops to let people on and off, a little more when the bus is fuller and at big bus stands. The door-to-door total adds the way to the stop, the wait for the bus, any change, and the way from the drop stop. It is an estimate, not a live arrival time.
Where do the fares come from?
From the stop-to-stop fares in the BMTC app data. When a pair is missing, the fare is read off BMTC's January 2025 stage charts and marked as an estimate. Check the ticket price when you buy.
What is the total cost of the trip?
The bus fare plus the cost of getting to the first bus stop and from the drop stop to where you are going. Those two rides are a walk, a bike taxi or an auto, priced with the same estimated tariffs as the metro planner, so the total is a range, not a quote. Women under Shakti pay nothing for ordinary buses, so for them the total is only the rides at each end.
Is it true that women travel free on BMTC buses?
Partly. Under the Shakti scheme, women and transgender women who live in Karnataka travel free on ordinary (non-AC) BMTC buses, but still collect a zero-value ticket and show a valid ID. AC buses (Vajra, Vayu Vajra) charge the full fare. This is based on news reports of the scheme. Tick the Shakti box to see fares that way.
Why compare an AC bus with an ordinary bus?
AC buses cost more, roughly 1.3 to 2 times the ordinary fare, but can be quicker or come more often. The comparison shows the best ordinary bus and the best AC bus for your trip side by side, with time and fare.
Is there crowd information for buses?
Only as a guess. BMTC does not publish how full its buses are, so Trafixcast estimates it. It splits bus riders into kinds (IT and tech-park commuters, other office workers, students, domestic and daily-wage workers, shoppers and errands, seniors and hospital visits, airport travellers, leisure), assumes when each travels and which routes they use, and adds up who is likely aboard at the hour you board. Ordinary buses fill faster than AC, partly because women ride free under Shakti. On Karnataka public holidays and weekends it assumes far fewer office, IT, school and factory riders and more shoppers and leisure trips. The shares are assumptions, not measurements, and it is not live.
Where does the bus data come from?
BMTC's Namma BMTC app data, collected by Vonter (bmtc-gtfs, ODbL 1.0) with attribution to BMTC. It only includes routes that the app tracks, so some routes may be missing.
