Trafixcast

About Trafixcast

One commuter’s question, answered for everyone in Bengaluru and Chennai.

Why I built it

Trafixcast began with my own daily trip to Whitefield, one of Bengaluru’s biggest traffic hotspots. The journey could take 40 minutes or 90, and ordinary maps were good at showing traffic right now but poor at answering the real question: if I leave at 8:10 instead of 9:00, or on Tuesday instead of Thursday, how much does it change?

So I built a calendar for the commute. Pick your trip, and Trafixcast shows how long it should take at each time over the next week, so you can decide when to go with the full picture in front of you.

What I believe

  • Simple first. One main screen, a few taps, an answer. If a feature needs a manual, I simplify it or cut it.
  • Honest. Traffic is uncertain, so Trafixcast shows ranges and a confidence level, never a false promise of “exactly 37 minutes”.
  • Private. There are no accounts and no sign-up. What you type is used to work out your estimate, and I do not keep a record of your trips.
  • Explainable. Every estimate has a visible breakdown, so you can see why a time is slow.

Free to use

Trafixcast is free to use, with no sign-up. Open it, pick your trip, and see your week.

Where it is going

Trafixcast is young. I plan to add Namma Metro and BMTC bus journeys, school and office rush-hour patterns, and more cities. None of this has a date, and I would rather build it well than quickly. I also want to measure how close the estimates are to real trips, and publish what I find.

TomTom for traffic predictions, Open-Meteo for weather, and OpenStreetMap contributors for the maps. Without these open and shared services a project like this would be out of reach.
